RHODES, ALEXANDER DE
-------------------------- NOV 1988 by Le6 Tro5ng Hie61u, VN Consulting Inc.,
62-65 Saunders St., Suite 1B, Rego Park, NY 11374.
Rhodes, Alexander De (1591-1660), a French Jesuit missionary, came to Ha2
No65i in 1627, where he quickly learned the language and began preaching in
Vietnamese. He is credited with perfecting the romanized system of writing
Vietnamese (Quo61c Ngu74), developed by several missionaries. In 1641, he
published the first Vietnamese-Portuguese-Latin dictionary using the
romanized script, Quo61c Ngu74. The purpose then was to facilitate the use
of the language for religious propaganda. Its widespread use only became
popular a century ago.
