  8. Rhodes, Alexander De (1591-1660), a French Jesuit missionary, came to Ha2
  9. No65i in 1627, where he quickly learned the language and began preaching in
  10. Vietnamese.  He is credited with perfecting the romanized system of writing
  11. Vietnamese (Quo61c Ngu74), developed by several missionaries.  In 1641, he
  12. published the first Vietnamese-Portuguese-Latin dictionary using the
  13. romanized script, Quo61c Ngu74.  The purpose then was to facilitate the use
  14. of the language for religious propaganda.  Its widespread use only became
  15. popular a century ago.
